Fantasy Football Draft Results
I had my fantasy football draft last night, it took a grueling 5 hours to complete, actually it's always a lot of fun. I participate in a 3 division/twelve team league over at cbs sportsline, scoring is a head to head point based system. I had the 5th pick this year. Also 14 of the first 15 picks were all running backs, Peyton Manning broke the streak and was selected 6th.
2007 Fantasy Football Draft Recap
Round 1
With the fifth pick in the first round i took the best running back available which was Brian Westbrook. Most mock drafts and magazines had him going anywhere from 2-6 so i'm quite happy he was still around. He will definitely be the main workhorse and point scorer for the Eagles this year. And if LT has an off year Brian could end up as the best fantasy back this year.
Round 2
With my pick in the second round (20th overall) i was planning on taking a wide receiver. But Steve Smith and Marvin Harrison were snatched up a few picks before me. So i had no problem taking QB Carson Palmer from Cincy with this pick. He is a serious league MVP candidate in my opinion. And with Peyton Manning being taken with the 6th overall selection i feel that this pick was a steal.
Round 3
Round 3, these middle round are always such a drag so i tend to draft for value. And with this pick i selected RB Marion Barber from the Dallas Cowboys (16 TD's last year).
Round 4
With my selection in the fourth round, 44th overall i took RB Clinton Portis from Washington. There were a few other players that i was looking at in this spot, but i felt they would still be available in the later rounds. If Portis can stay healthy and have an average Clinton Portis type of year then this would be a pretty good selection, otherwise it's a wasted pick.
Round 5
With the 55th over all pick i selected WR Hines Ward from Pittsburgh. I was in a real need for a wide reciever and he was the best available and according to the so called "gurus" i selected him in the correct spot. He's a very durable player who should contribute some solid points every Sunday. Plus i think Pittsburg is going to have a really good year.
Round 6
At this point in the fantasy football draft i started to think about money. And in my league there are payouts at the end of the year for position leaders. So with the 68th pick i take San Diego kicker Nate Kaeding, two time field-goal/extra point leader in my league.
Round 7
With the 77th overall pick i selected the defense/special-teams of the New England Patriots. I think to be successful in any fantasy football league you need a good scoring defense. With the Bears and Ravens defense both being selected in the fourth round i feel fortunate to get the 3rd ranked DST unit this late in the draft.
Round 8
At this point in the draft i wasn't really sure what to do, it's one of the gray rounds. So i drafted running back Warrick Dunn from Atlanta, i was sort of surprised he was still around for me to select with the 92nd pick. If he can stay healthy it could end up being a nice pick. I have had Dunn on my fantasy football teams in past years and he has always been a good productive player.
Round 9
I really needed some wide receiver help and i get kind of lucky. A sleeper i was targeting was available so with the 101st pick i select WR Brandon Marshall from Denver. He is battling Rod Smith as the #2 spot behind Javon Walker. I think Marshall is going to have a really good year and i wasn't sure if he would be around later so i grabbed him while i could.
Round 10
UGH, the late rounds there was nothing on the board that i liked so i filled the Tight End position and drafted Dallas Clark from the World Champion Indianapolis Colts. Peyton Manning loves throwing to him and with all the attention defenses will place on Marvin Harrison and Joseph Addai, this could end up being a solid pick.
Round 11
With the departure of Darrell Jackson to San Fransico, D.J. Hackett becomes the #2 WR in Seattle. And i need a lot of help at the wide receiver position so with the 125th pick in the draft i selected D.J. Hackett. This is his third year in the league which is typically a WR's breakout year. At this late in the draft, this could end up being a very nice pick.
Round 12
In desprate need of a backup quarterback i select the only starter still available. Drum roll please, with the 140th selection i select QB J.P. Losman from Buffalo. Losman did throw for 3000+ yards last year and has a talented wide receiver to throw to in Lee Evans. But for J.P to have any fantasy football value he will need to drastically cut down on the amount of interceptions he throws.
Round 13
With the second to last pick in the draft and absolutely no idea what to do i select rookie WR Anthony Gonzalez from the Indianapolis Colts. Anthony Gonzalez is the colts first round pick from Ohio State and with Brandon Stokley gone, Gonzalez will be starting in the slot. I'm not sure if this a decent long shot or a wasted pick.
Round 14
Finally the last pick in the draft and i take running back Kenneth Darby from Tampa Bay. Darby a really speedy rookie from Alabama who is having a fantastic training camp. With the Buc's looking to move Micheal Pittman to FB means Darby will become the third down back and Cadillac Williams backup. Cadillac Williams is having a so so training camp and has a history of getting hurt, so Darby could easily see some major playing time this year and be a huge sleeper.
Thats the wrapup of my 2007 fantasy football draft. The league has been together 8 years and i have won it twice. I believe i should be able to compete for my division this year, it looks like there is only one team i need to worry about and he has Tomlinson, Steve Smith, and Chad Johnson. Then if i make the playoff who knows, i will need some luck to win the championship, but stranger things have happened.
